机械原因故障是航班延误的主要原因之一。随着飞行器技术的飞速发展，飞机的安全系数也在不断提高，
也具备详细的的定期维护计划，绝大部分的故障隐患都会在这些例行检查中得到及时处理。但再完善仔细的例行维护也无法保证飞机设备不会突然出现故障，这往往不是正常的例行检查就可以避免的。为了确保安全，彻底排除故障隐患势必造成一定程度的延误，这也是值得的，毕竟，安全是最重要的，机械故障必须确定解决，飞机才能上天。一般来说，如果飞机故障地为该航空公司基地，排除故障时间较快，即使是大故障一一时难以修复，由于在基地，也比较容易调配其他飞机，延误时间会较短。但如果飞机故障地为外站，当地可能缺少必要的检修设备、零件和维修人员，这种情况造成延误所需时间有时很难确定。如果飞机故障一时难以排除，即使调配飞机也需要较长时间。
