打开遮阳板的原因是需要利用外界光线提供辅助采光。如果飞机出现紧急情况且应急出口灯及客舱照明系统因为某种原因不能使用，乘客可以利用通过舷窗照射进来的光线撒离，防止在黑暗中发生拥挤、踩踏等情况，撒离能够更加迅速，为挽救生命财产争取时间。同时这样也便于舱外的营教人员观察内部状况便于施救。当飞机在水面迫降时，可能飞机一侧是陆地，一侧则是海水，乘客可以选择安全的一侧撤离飞机。
